San Martino and the Hospice Palliative Care
The date of 11 November was chosen because it is linked to the legend of Martin, a young soldier of Pannonia, which more than 1,500 years ago to help an old worn out by the rain and cold, offered half cutting his cloak with his sword.
After this act of spontaneous generosity of a sudden the weather changed, the sky cleared and the air became incredibly mild: he was born the 'Summer S. Martino. The term palliative
then, has its etymological roots in its Latin "pallium" = mantle and the sense of covering, wrap, protect (as in a cloak) is the one that comes closest to the meaning you want to attribute to the term palliative .
